«Exegi monumentum aere perennius». I erected a monument more lasting than bronze (Horace). Urs Fischer here is the exact opposite: it creates a monument destined to disappear and leave no trace. Giambologna’s art melts and the viewer dissolves. Perhaps it is the declaration of surrender, the claim that art is no longer able to build a bridge beyond death, and perhaps even beyond the moment. The tyranny of time seems to win and the art, just as man, melts back to the state of mass. ”You were ashes and ashes you shall return”. A memento mori for the man and the artist. Even if the art doesn’t last, what will really last? Urs Fischer leaves us with the anxiety of knowing that does not add up. Yet we remain ahead of the casting with a certainty that image becomes fixed within us indelibly. Forever.
Here is the list of finalists and the selection criteria of the works.
Friday, December 16th at 16:00, at Bar Genzana Via San Gottardo in Lugano will be the prize (a check for 13.5 Swiss Francs).
